Permaculture in a Nutshell

E-mail Print PDF

You may never have heard of it, but Permaculture has been an established world-wide design system for over thirty years. In essence it is a design system for sustainable living, an approach to designing and creating healthy and productive places to work, rest and play. In Britain, people are using permaculture to transform homes and gardens, farms, schools, community projects, businesses, allotments and woodlands, in cities and the countryside.

Permaculture works because it can inspire you to create your own solutions to local and global problems, and enhance your quality of life using local resources and your own skills and talents.

Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, two Australians, first formulated the principles of Permaculture in the 1970s, and have since taught Permaculture to thousands of people who in turn have gone on to teach thousands more. Permaculture design has produced startling results in parts of the world previously written off by conventional agriculture and horticulture. For an example of what can be done in extreme environments, see Geoff Lawton's short film Greening the Desert.
